At Stony Brook Counseling Center, we have an intensive out-patient evening program to treat drug addiction and alcohol dependence.
Stony Brook Counseling Center, Inc. Intensive Out Patient Evening program is a six-week program focusing on treatment of drug addiction, alcohol dependence, alcoholism, chemical dependence, and co-occurring mood disorders. The program is designed to offer a treatment alternative to individuals needing help for the disease of addiction without it interfering with jobs families, or other day time commitments.
Three nights a week, from 6PM to 9PM, over the course of six weeks, our clients engage with a counselor and with each other to overcome addiction through the use of three components: Psycho-Education, or teaching clients to recognize defense mechanisms, co-occuring disorders, and understand the disease concept of chemical dependency, and more; Family Involvement, by building communication skills for our clients, and helping families begin the recovery process; Relapse prevention, which is attained by teaching clients to recognize mistaken attitudes and beliefs, and develop a relapse prevention plan, and more.

Lonnie (Elana) Polsyn is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (SW11710) and a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from University of Florida in 1985. Then in 2010 earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a concentration on Services to Elderly and their Families. She is also a Qualified Supervisor for Registered Social Worker Interns.
Ms. Polsyn has worked extensively with the older population and hospice patients. Lonnie has provided bereavement counseling to adults in the South Florida community for over 7 years and has worked with the Children’s Bereavement Center. She currently specializes in working with older persons and caregivers of persons with chronic illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia, and COPD. Lonnie also provides services to persons experiencing Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, grief and loss, self-esteem issues, adjustment disorders, , life transitions, aging in place, and end of life decisions.
Lonnie is empathetic, compassionate, and non-judgmental and has the ability to relate to others at their level. She offers a safe environment in which her clients can comfortably express themselves, explore their issues at hand, and learn the coping skills necessary to help them handle their personal situations more effectively.

Through her experience servicing children in foster care, abuse victims in the outpatient counseling setting, adolescents and adult with chronic mental illness in psychiatrist in-patient hospitalization; Anika has developed a passion for advocacy and Client Center Treatment. I am a bilingual Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida with specialized training in various therapeutic modalities. Carol Gwaltney received her masters degree in Clinical Social Work from Barry University. Her areas of expertise include chemical dependency, relapse prevention, codependency, Adult Children of Alcoholics, personality disorders and mood disorders. Ms. Gwaltney is the clinical director and primary therapist of an evening Intensive Out-patient Program for substance abuse. Ms. Gwaltney’s client base includes individual, couples and family counseling.
Ms. Monica Zarate received her Masters of Education degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Miami. Ms. Zarate has extensive experience in the implementation of family-focused prevention and treatment interventions with families of children and adolescents ages 6-17. She uses an evidence-based systemic approach to strengthen family functioning and reduce symptoms—Brief Strategic Family Therapy®. She currently trains and supervises clinicians learning BSFT in community-based agencies nationally and internationally. Ms. Zarate also specializes in working with couples using BSFT. She has extensive work experience in the area of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). She is a contributing author in the recently published Family Therapy Review: Contrasting Contemporary Models. Ms. Zarate is also fluent in Spanish.
Mr. Molinari is the founder of Stony Brook Counseling Center. He received his masters degree in Social Work from Barry University. Mr. Molinari specializes in couples/marital couneling, individual psychotherapy, mood and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, grief and spiritual counseling.
